Topsoil is used for creating new lawns, raised beds, borders, vegetable gardens and general landscaping. Good-quality topsoil provides a suitable growing medium for grass, plants, shrubs and trees. When ordering loose delivered topsoil, choose a grade suited to your project, as requirements can differ for turfing, planting and general landscaping.
The amount of topsoil you need depends on the area being covered and the required depth. Measure the length and width of the area in metres and multiply these by the required depth in metres to calculate the approximate volume in cubic metres. Allowing a little extra can help account for settlement and variations in ground level.
Topsoil is a mineral-rich growing medium used to build up ground levels and provide a base for lawns and planting. Compost is primarily organic material used to improve soil structure, fertility and moisture retention. For many landscaping projects, topsoil provides the main growing medium while compost can be incorporated as a soil improver.
Mulch is spread over the soil around plants, shrubs, trees and borders. It can help suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature and give landscaped areas a neat finished appearance. Organic mulches can also gradually contribute organic matter to the soil as they break down.
A mulch layer of approximately 50–75mm is commonly suitable for beds and borders. The ideal depth depends on the mulch material, existing ground conditions and the purpose of the project. The ground should normally be cleared of established weeds before the mulch is applied.
Yes. Loose delivery is a practical option for landscaping projects requiring larger quantities of topsoil or mulch. The material is typically tipped from the delivery vehicle onto a suitable accessible area, so you should make sure there is enough space and suitable access before arranging delivery.
