3 Tips for the Low Maintenance Outdoor Space

Rob Byrne - Friday, December 28, 2012

Making the most of the glorious U.K summer isn’t all about a Chelsea Flower Show standard of skill and planting knowledge. There are plenty of ways to make sure your garden is stylish, inviting and stress-free throughout every season, and flooring material choice is just one of them!

1. Good quality flooring (and lots of it!)

The best gardens look great over the longest time period possible. One of the easiest ways to boost your chances of a year-round stylish garden is to do away with the chaos of planting and opt for something like Indian sandstone paving, decking or slate chippings. A blend of garden decking and paving can be wonderfully stylish and practical.

2. Planters instead of bedding

Some plants and lawns can’t help but create lots of work for their owner, especially gardens with lots of seasonal plants and bedding areas. Skip the bedding for lots of easy-to-maintain pots, planters and baskets. They’re also great for helping urban spaces or rented gardens look tidy without too much investment.

3. Designing for your needs

We love our gardens more when they’re useful and designed for our personal lifestyles. Ask yourself what you really want the garden to be for – a play area, working outside, family meal times or evening naps? It’s no use creating a garden that’s not practical. Once you’ve got the proposed use pinned down, it’s easier to choose things like surface materials, plants and accessories.
